Yvonne is helping to raise rare and heritage breed pigs on her family’s farm just north of Sebringville ON. In doing so, she plays an important role in supplying specialty pork products to some of Ontario’s most renowned restaurants, including the Old Mill in Ancaster, and Rundles in Stratford. Yvonne attended both St. Patrick’s School (Kinkora) and St. Ambrose, before heading to St. Michael Catholic Secondary School. Upon graduation, she was asked to take over some of her parents’ duties on the farm. Skills she learned at St. Mike’s, such as time management, effective communication and computer skills, turned out to be invaluable. Yvonne also learned to be open to new challenges. Her teachers helped Yvonne to feel at home in school, and because of them, she still feels part of the community. “Those that helped me still keep in touch, asking me to come back and visit,” says Yvonne. “I feel like I’m still a part of the school and that the faith we shared strengthened our connection. As far as I’m concerned, my Catholic high school experience was the greatest opportunity ever!”

Students and staff gathered around the alter under a canopy of sun and cloud for this year-end celebration, which marked the end of another successful school year.

Throughout semester two, a group of secondary teachers from St. Anne's C.S.S. and St. Michael C.S.S. have engaged in a professional learning community focusing on "Learning for All" students. These teachers have been working together to research and implement strategies that support learning and high levels of success for all students in their classrooms. The group visited two secondary schools in Toronto this week, Mary Ward C.S.S. and Marshall McLuhan C.S.S., to learn about the successes in these schools and thereby, enhance their own practices.

Angela Phillips enjoys bringing creations to life. As a landscape designer and the owner of her own successful business, she loves being able to connect with clients, transforming their vision for an outdoor living space into lush, green reality. After graduation Angela headed to the University of Guelph to study agriculture, but soon realized her passion was in landscape design – which led her to Fanshawe College in London ON, for another three-year course of study. Years earlier, at St. Patrick’s School (Kinkora) and St. Michael Catholic Secondary School, she discovered that extra-curricular activities and playing sports gave her the confidence she needed to get things done. It was a lesson she relied on when launching her own landscape design business back in 2002. Today, Angela is thankful for the lessons she learned in school, and also for the sense of community she found there: “a stable and understanding group of friends with the same beliefs and practices made such a difference for me,” she says, “and now, I realize even more how important it was back then.”

Core and Immersion French teachers recently received training in the use of a video camera and IPod Touch. Each teacher learned how each teaching tool functions and had an opportunity to practise using both. These teachers are spending time using the technology in their lessons. They will meet again to share their lessons and ideas on how to continue to use technology to engage students and to encourage oral french language use. These technology tools and training are funded by a Ministry Grant.

Students from Grades 3 through 8 enjoyed a live performance by Roland Bibeau. The concert featured an interactive music video with lyrics, fun French songs and wonderful guitar-work. Students demonstrated their oral French language skill as well as their rock and roll talents during the engaging music, and motivational french demonstration. Many student volunteers showed great spirit by performing along with Bibeau. Merci beaucoup!

The Avon Maitland-Huron Perth Regional Science Fairs were held on March 31st and April 1st. During this two day period over two hundred local students shared their science projects and inventions. Next time you’re in Goderich, crank up the radio at lunchtime and you’ll likely be in the company of Ally Anderson. As Midday Announcer and Promotions Director at 104.5 The Beach, she spins hit tunes across Ontario’s West Coast and engages listeners with wacky contests that have taken her from jail cells to “Dancing With the Stars”.
Ally has been comfortable in the media spotlight since attending St. Anne’s Catholic Secondary School in Clinton, where she helped to produce a closed-circuit daily morning television show. She caught the media bug early, but took a few detours on her way to the broadcasting booth, including supply teaching jobs that left her feeling like she hadn’t yet found her calling.

Gerard Creces is a familiar presence around his hometown of Goderich. As Sports Editor of the Goderich Signal-Star and a self-described “all-purpose reporter”, he keeps his notepad handy and his camera lens focused happenings across the region.
While curiosity plays a big part in helping him get to the heart of his stories, Gerard also relies on a strong sense of empathy and compassion. “You never know what people are dealing with,” he explains. “You want to approach things in such a way that people will want to speak with you again.”
Gerard is well aware that despite outward appearances, many people are struggling. He learned it first hand for himself, shortly before high school.

The St. Anne's Me to We Group has raised an incredible $37,000 to help build a Girls High School in Kenya with Free the Children. Students worked diligently to plan an African Culture Night where 350 guests were treated to traditional Kenyan food, entertainment and crafts.

Lesley spoke about her personal journey with learning disabilities and highlighted that her gifts, talents and capabilities far outnumber any limitations she faces. This message, in turn, reminded everyone that all students have God-given gifts and talents and that it is the job of all educators to help students discover their full potential.

Sister Joan Cronin, Executive Director of Ontario's Institute for Catholic Education (ICE), facilitated a session for the Journey to Leadership candidates of the Huron-Perth Catholic District School Board. Twelve elementary and secondary teachers have chosen to explore and discern their call to Catholic educational leadership through the Journey to Leadership program. This year-long, three-module program is designed to acquaint teachers with the skills of Catholic leadership, and to help the candidates develop their leadership skills. Sister Joan's session dealt with leadership from a Catholic perspective.

Tony Pook never wanted a desk job. After completing a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Guelph, he caught the travel bug and headed to Australia to study deep sea diving. Working contract to contract, he had a chance to travel the world and eventually landed back in Canada for diving job on the hydro dams in Ottawa, ON. Commercial diving gave Tony plenty of time to pursue other avenues, including launching his own company, based on the “Pook Toques” that shape on the family sewing machine. The toques have gained popularity through trade shows, craft shows and online sales (pooktoques.com), which Tony pursues between diving contracts. He says his faith-based education has helped him uncover the path to success. “At Holy Name of Mary School, growing up in the Catholic system was definitely a benefit. When someone outlines the values to you as an impressionable kid, they become something you keep for life.” At St. Michael Catholic Secondary School, Tony developed the strong work ethic and positive attitude which are now reflected in his successful business.

The power of teamwork is something that all stakeholders in Huron Perth Catholic are familiar with. As we work together on behalf of student learning we know that we are all winners. The Canadian athletes who participated in the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games reminded us of this through their efforts in training and performing at the games. Steve Simmons, a reporter in Vancouver, stated, “The face of the Vancouver Olympics was not of any one athlete or any one event but of a Canadian, all dressed in red, dancing and celebrating, with a flag stenciled just below the eyes.” Congratulations to all of the athletes who participated and demonstrated at its best what it means to be part of a team.
Congratulations to all of the members of our board who work diligently and continually demonstrate the power of teamwork.

Boards across the province have been offered opportunities to build collaborative professional learning experiences for our teachers of intermediate mathematics as part of the Math GAINS initiative. In Huron Perth Catholic DSB teachers of both our elementary and secondary schools have been working together to share experiences, ideas and strategies that can be used to improve student achievement in mathematics. We are in the process of creating professional learning networks to provide a collaborative environment in which elementary and secondary teachers can support each other in promoting sustainable gains in student achievement of mathematics that will ensure success for our students for years to come.

As a Catholic Community of Caring, members of the board office staff joined staff and students from St. Patrick's school, Dublin and St. Columban school, to celebrate Ash Wednesday Mass with Fr. Chris Gillespie. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the liturgical season of Lent. We remember the time Jesus entered the desert for 40 days to fast and pray. Lent is a time when we are called to pray, to change our hearts and to grow closer to God. We must try harder to live lives of love just as Jesus taught us. The symbolism of ashes being placed on our foreheads reminds us of our human weakness. These ashes were once the palms used on Palm Sunday, so they are also ashes of hope. We take them to remind us that we are part of the God's creation. "Thou art dust, and unto dust thou shalt return."

John McCaroll, Principal (St. Ambrose, Stratford) and Nancy Barrett, Principal (St. Joseph, Clinton) joined principals from southwestern Ontario school boards recently, to meet with Ministry representatives, Rod Peturson and Jim Grieves. Updated information about the New Early Learning Program coming to all school boards in Ontario in September 2010 was shared. Rod Peturson called this "a completely new program" based on the most current high-quality research available. Principals and Board leads were able to ask questions around the Board Program that includes a Core Day and the Extended day portion of the program as well as the role of the teachers and ECE workers who will be involved in training and delivery of the "Extended Day Early Learning Program". HPCDSB has received approval for the Program in two schools for the coming year, St. Ambrose in Stratford and St. Joseph's in Clinton.

Each year, the Board is honoured to recognize the efforts and achievements of students whose actions and presence in their school makes a very positive difference. Students may have demonstrated these actions in a particular class, through an extracurricular activity, by regularly helping fellow students to the best of his/her ability or perhaps in all of these areas and more. Each student invited two guests to the event as well as their teacher and/or principal. The Huron County Applause Awards took place at the Dinner Bell Restaurant in Clinton on February 3rd.

Danielle Anstett always knew she was meant to practice medicine. From her days in elementary school at St. Joseph’s (Clinton), and later at St. Anne’s Catholic Secondary School, she was aware of her calling, and thankful for the open and supportive learning environment that helped her move towards her goal.“Back then, I was responsible for my own learning – and that ability is important for me today,” she explains, reflecting on the nature of the health care field. “You never know what you’re going to see in a day. There are always new opportunities to learn. Seizing that opportunity for growth is key if you’re going to improve the lives of others and their health.”After graduating from St. Anne’s, Danielle headed to University of Western Ontario in London, ON to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in physiology and psychology. She took one year off to gain hands-on experience through job shadowing, then headed overseas to medical school at the National University of Ireland (NUI), where she is currently in her second year. Between terms, she works closer to home with the Clinton Hospital and Family Health Team.

The families and friends of Jeanne Sauve Catholic school in Stratford celebrated Family Literacy on January 24th. Families were treated to a variety of activities involving literacy, such as making books and bookmarks, playing puzzles and games, completing a scavenger hunt, and doing Karaoke. In the picture above, Tim Barton reads to his children in front of the Reading Tent. Kindergarten teachers, Nancy Lichti and MaryEllen Nelson have been organizing this annual event for several years in order to promote the importance of reading, playing games and spending time talking to children at home.

On January 27th the CBC and Tim Horton's sponsored school presentations for Hockey Day in Huron Perth CDSB as one of the events for the week long celebration of Hockey Day in Canada. Our Stratford Catholic Schools were visited by hockey personalities Tim Taylor, Cassie Campbell-Pascall, Kevin Weekes, Steve Miller, Wendell Clark, Mark Lee and Peter Puck. The theme of the presentations was teamwork and each of the schools had a chance to demonstrate this by presenting school spirit cheers and addressing our guests with very interesting and challenging questions. The two hour long presentations held at St. Michael Secondary School were received with great excitement and will have a lasting impression for the elementary students of St. Aloysius, St. Ambrose, St. Joseph, and Jeanne Sauve schools.

School Improvement Teams from seven schools in Huron County participating in this LNS project, met as a network this week to learn more about guided reading. This instructional strategy was identified on each of their School Improvement Plans as key to achieving their SMART goal and principals had identified this as an excellent common focus for the meeting. Literacy Resource Teachers provided a carousel of informative sessions for participants on Assessment During Instruction; Planning the Focus, Tracking and Organizing a Guided Reading Lesson; and Flexible, Dynamic Groups and Classroom Management. Principals from these schools also participated in a session on Guided Reading Instructional Resources and Look Fors.

The Olympic Torch made a visit to St.Mary's School in Listowel. Each student had an opportunity to hold the torch and get their pictures taken. Several interesting facts about the torch relay were shared in each classroom! Ohenewa Akuffo, Canadian Olympic Wrestler, spoke to our students about following your dream and the importance of hard work and dedication. She participated in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She told us about the torch and the flame as a symbol of hope in attaining one's goal. She has us full of the Olympic spirit!

Dan Carroll is used to drawing a crowd in his distinctive scarlet uniform and bearskin headdress. He’s a part of the Changing of the Guard Ceremony on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, ON, playing bass trombone in the Band of the Ceremonial Guard, a part of the Canadian Forces Primary Reserve. He’s a respected ambassador for his country, for Jeanne Sauvé Catholic Elementary School and for St. Michael Catholic Secondary School, where his strengths and talents came to the fore. “St. Mike’s was an exciting, good environment,” says Dan. “The staff and students were very supportive of my musical goals and I was given many opportunities to grow, musically, academically and socially.” At the beginning of his high school career, Dan wasn't sure what his pathway would be, but the support of the school community helped tremendously, giving him the chance to grow, learn and develop confidence. Dan is currently working towards his Bachelor of Music at the University of Western Ontario and was one of 100 musicians chosen from across Canada for the Ceremonial Guard. He’s considering a position with a professional military band as a full time career.

As we reflect on the true meaning of Christmas and we journey through the season of Advent, the students and staff at St. Aloyisus have prayed for patience and for hope, as they await the celebration of the birth of Jesus. We prayed for peace throughout our world, especially for those who are experiencing conflict, for those less fortunate than us, and for those who are in ill health. As a school community we wanted to come together and provide some comfort by offering some gifts for those less fortunate than us.

Few times are more sacred for our families and households than Christmas. Along with Advent, the Christmas Season is rich in traditions that, despite modern commercialism, still stir our hearts and our imaginations. The Christmas tree, the manger scene, the music and carols, the lights shining in the winter snowy darkness, are just a few of the symbols that heighten our joyful proclamation of the birth of Jesus and call us to come and adore him. At St. Joseph's School in Stratford, Christmas traditions are also very important during this blessed season, including the annual Christmas Turkey Dinner. This event brings the entire school community together, to share a meal and celebrate this very special time of waiting and anticipating the birthday of Christ.

At the Inaugural Board Meeting held Monday, December 7, Mike Miller was acclaimed to the position of Chairperson of the Huron-Perth Catholic District School Board with Bernard Murray being acclaimed as Vice-Chairperson. Both veterans to the Board, Miller and Murray have served the Board for the past 18 years and 24 years respectively. This is Miller's fourth term as Chair and Murray's third term as Vice-Chair.

A Catholic Community of Caring Coat Collection held on December 1st... A huge success! In partnership with the local parish community, the Huron-Perth Catholic Schools participated in a one-day Catholic Community of Caring Coat Drive on December 1st, 2009. Many more people in Huron & Perth counties will be warm this winter due to the generous support and kindness of those donations. Thank you for contributing to this Advent project by helping others in need. It is a wonderful way to prepare for the Lord's coming!

Craig and Marc Kielberger join St. Michael students and teacher Heidi Clark at the When Faith Meets Pedagogy Youth Forum in October. The Kielbergers, founders of the Me to We foundation, inspired our students through their works of Christian service to children and youth around the world. The brothers are graduates of Ontario's Catholic school system, and they provided a strong testament to the influence that their Catholic education has had on their lives of service to others.

System leaders met this week to engage in professional dialogue about student learning. Our electronic data warehouse provided quick and easy access to a range of student achievement data which was analyzed and discussed by participants to gain knowledge about student learning needs at their schools. School teaching staff will meet this Friday to plan instruction that addresses these learning needs.

Grade 2 students in Mrs. Scott's class at St. Patrick's School are glad to be back at school. Coming back to school after the summer break makes them happy because they "like music, like to see friends, like learning French and Math and like to learn more and more things".
